ABC 2017

2017 ABC Ballot Report

Hello Fellow ACA Members:

The 2017 ABC was exciting and began a new era of involvement by the membership in determining the course the fellowship will take in the coming years. Your voices were heard last year at the 2016 ABC and this year's ABC was a demonstration of that collective conscience.

There were 12 ballot proposals that received the 2/3 affirmative vote by the fellowship to become motions at the ABC. The motions were all discussed in depth and given due consideration by the delegates and trustees. The minority opinion was heard for each proposal and even affected the final outcome of some of the votes.

Here is a brief summary of how the ABC voted on the ballot proposal motions.

Proposal 1 - Passed - We propose that the following statement on "I Statements" be posted on the ACA website as a resource...

Proposal 3 - Passed - We propose that the WSO create a workbook on “Becoming Your Own Loving Parent.” Activities, questions, and tools will be drawn from chapter 8, related parts of the BRB and ACA member suggestions.

Proposal 4 - Passed - We propose that the WSO revise BRB Chapter 11 and the sponsorship pamphlet for clarity and consistency.

Proposal 5 - Failed - We propose that the WSO of ACA, and the Fellowship of ACA, “go to any lengths” to adopt the 12 Steps of Tony A.

Proposal 8 - Passed - We propose that a Telephone Conference Meeting Committee be created, since telephone conference meetings have issues unique and separate from face to face meetings.

Proposal 9 - Failed - We propose that when Regions register with WSO, the Board of Trustees promptly (within 30 days) seat the duly elected Region Representatives as full members of the Board in accordance with the maximum number of Trustees set by the ACA foundational documents.

Proposal 10 - Passed - We propose change on p. 13 of BRB from “refrain from all prescription medication use” to “refrain from all prescription medication misuse.”

Proposal 11 - Failed - We propose that this additional sentence should be added directly after the  sentence in the previous proposal: "We also recommend that the adult child guards  against the misuse of any other substances or processes to self soothe the pain of a  dysfunctional childhood (eg, work, food, gambling, sex, relationships, shopping,  internet use, exercise.)”

Proposal 12 - Passed - We propose that "anti prescription medication use" comments, rather than a "misuse of prescription medication" comments, be removed anywhere the sentiment is expressed in ACA/DF official literature or amended to make it clear that misuse is the issue.

Proposal 13 - Passed - We propose that that the WSO explains more specifically what ‘closed’  means anywhere that the term is used.

Proposal 15 - Passed - We propose that the fellowship would consider changing the first statement in The "Laundry List" to read as: “These are characteristics we seem to have in common due to being brought up in an alcoholic or otherwise dysfunctional household.”

Proposal 16 - Failed - We propose that ACA/WSO open up discussion among our fellowship to introduce Tony A’s ACOA 12 Steps to our membership as conference approved material.

2017 ABC AWC Report - December 2016

Susan began by thanking the Board for extending the ABC and ACA World Convention by starting the ABC business meeting portion on Thursday. Having the extra day will allow the AWC convention portion to be started on Friday evening and it will allow for more speakers, workshops, etc.

Susan shared that the website for the host committee was now live and could be accessed by going to, where registration information for both the event and hotel could be found. Actual event program information would be provided as it is developed.

A call for presenters was also posted with a deadline of December 15. Interested parties can go to the website and fill out the form. Susan then reported that the registration page should be live in the next week.

The committee will be posting a downloadable flyer in the next to week that can be accessed by intergroups or meetings to advertise and promote the convention.

Susan announced Marianna T. a member from Bulgaria that speaks about 4 languages including Russian, has volunteered to serve as the international coordinator for the host committee. She will be working with delegates that need housing, transportation from the airport, or anything that comes up with international guest.

The committee will also be launching a “traveling solo” outreach to provide support, information, etc. to individuals that may be traveling alone so they don’t feel “left out”. Susan extended a “holiday wish list” – a bold headline on the home page of the ACA website that would urge people to register and attend the events in April.

Susan closed by asking everyone to assist in spreading the word and to encourage participation for the 2017 ABC AWC. Adding that by getting registrations in early, the committee could better gauge the size of the event for improved planning. It was also encouraged to use SLACK as the communication tool. It has been very useful.

ABC Committee Report - March 2017

The ABC Committee has had a busy year not only seeking a host for the 2017 ABC-AWC and assisting the committee in planning as well as being the board liaison, but also being proactive and soliciting bids to host the 2018 ABC-AWC outside the US in Toronto, Canada.

In addition, the ABC has undertaken the ambitious role of getting the delegate binder for the ABC prepared in advance and out to the delegates about 3 weeks in advance of the ABC instead of them showing up at the conference and receiving the 1-1/2 thick binder full of information right before they go into the conference.

The Vice-chair of the committee, Jim R, has done a great job of keeping us organized this busy year. My congratulations to him and the other members of the committee who stuck with it through hours of discussions surrounding the bid evaluations for both the 2017 ABC-AWC and the 2018 ABC-AWC. Thank you to Melani, David, Nancy, and Susan from San Diego. It has been a pleasure working you all and the others who helped out along the way.

I see big things for the ABC Committee in the coming years as our ABC and World Convention begin to grow to accommodate the growth of this magnificent fellowship!
